After hitting 88.39 m with his first throw of the qualification round, India’s Neeraj Chopra will be eyeing breaking the 90 m mark in the World Athletics Championships 2022 final in javelin throw.
The current edition is Chopra’s second outing at the Championships, after he failed to reach the finals in the 2017 edition. An injury forced him to miss the 2019 Championships.
India’s hopes of a second medal at the event will be resting on the shoulders of the 24-year-old. The nation’s only previous medal at the World Championships belongs to long jumper Anju Bobby George, who secured Bronze in 2003.
Chopra will be joined by compatriot Rohit Yadav, who will also be taking part in the final. While India will be hoping that the 24-year-old can secure the gold medal, the biggest threat to his chances of getting the top spot on the podium will be Anderson Peters.
Peters was able to hit an impressive 89.91 m in the qualification round and is known to be someone capable of breaking the 90 m mark with relative ease. The match-up between the two athletes for the gold medal will surely be one of the highlights of the day.
If Chopra does end up getting the top prize, he will become the second Asian athlete to win gold in the World Junior Championship, Commonwealth Games, Asian Games, the Olympics, and the World Championships.
