Maharashtra BJP chief Chandrakant Patil said the party decided with a heavy heart that Sena rebel Eknath Shinde should become the state’s chief minister instead of Devendra Fadnavis.

Chandrakant Patil claimed that the BJP went ahead with Eknath Shinde as the chief minister as the party needed to send out a clear message as well as ensure stability of the state government.

“We needed to provide a leader who would convey the right message and ensure stability. The central leadership and Devendra-ji decided to back Eknath Shinde as CM with a heavy heart. We were unhappy but decided to accept the decision,” Patil said.

In what could be termed as the first spark of resentment within the BJP after Eknath Shinde-led rebellion brought down the MVA government, the words were uttered by the Maharashtra BJP chief at its state executive meeting.

The new state government was sworn in on June 30, but to the shock of many, Devendra Fadnavis was made the deputy chief minister, whereas rebel leader Eknath Shinde was sworn in as the chief minister.

“We were sad but we digested our sadness and moved ahead because we had to push the cart forward,” Chandrakant Patil said on Saturday.

While the CM and Deputy CM were sworn in last month, the expansion of Eknath Shinde’s cabinet is still awaited.
