The Jammu and Kashmir Police on Thursday booked a local Muslim cleric for his alleged hate remarks against the now suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma in the Doda district.

The Muslim cleric had called for the beheading of Nupur Sharma over the remarks made by her against Prophet Muhammad during a TV debate.

In the video of the incident, Adil Gafoor Ganai can be seen speaking from a mosque and addressing the crowd below him in Bhaderwah town.

He also purportedly called Hindus ‘cow urine drinkers’ and ‘cow dung eaters’, police said.

An FIR has already been registered with the Bhaderwah police station. The police also said that anyone who takes the law into their hands will not be spared.

Meanwhile, a curfew has been imposed in the town as a precautionary measure in view of the incident.

THE CONTROVERSY

In a recent TV debate on the ongoing Gyanvapi row, Nupur Sharma is believed to have said that certain things from Islamic religious books could be mocked by people. She said Muslims are mocking the Hindu faith and calling the ‘Shivling’ claimed to have been found inside the mosque complex a fountain.

Cases have been registered against Nupur Sharma for hurting religious sentiments in Hyderabad, Pune and Mumbai.
