India vs South Africa: IPL 2022 Purple Cap winner Yuzvendra Chahal eyes massive T20 milestone

/

Leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal is all set to achieve a major milestone in the upcoming T20I series against South Africa, starting June 9 in New Delhi. The senior spinner is on the verge of becoming the leading wicket-taker by an Indian bowler in T20 cricket.

Chahal is 2 wickets behind R Ashwin, who is currently the leading Indian wicket-taker in T20 cricket. With 5 T20Is to be played against South Africa from June 9 to 19, Chahal has a great chance to add to his tally and go past Ashwin on the elite list.

Chahal is currently at the 18th spot in the all-time list which is led by former West Indies pacer Dwayne Bravo, who has 582 wickets in 532 matches. Chahal has picked up 274 wickets in 242 matches while Ashwin, who is not part of the upcoming T20I series against South Africa, has 276 wickets from 282 matches.

Chahal has 2 5-wicket hauls in T20 cricket. The Rajasthan Royals leg-spinner, who won the Purple Cap in IPL 2022 with 27 wickets in 17 matches, picked up his maiden 5-wicket haul and a hat-trick in the recently-concluded edition of the IPL as the Royals reached only their 2nd final.

MOST WICKETS BY AN INDIAN BOWLER IN T20s

R Ashwin – 274 in 282 matches

Yuzvendra Chahal – 272 in 242 matches

Piyush Chawla – 270 in 256 matches

Amit Mishra – 262 in 236 matches

Jasprit Bumrah – 253 in 207 matches

Notably, Yuzvendra Chahal already holds the record for the most wickets by an Indian in T20I cricket. The Haryana leg-spinner has picked up 68 wickets in 54 matches, 1 more than Bumrah who has been rested for the assignment against South Africa.

Chahal has picked up 4 wickets in as many T20Is this year as the leg-spinner was brought into the scheme of things after he was dropped for the T20 World Cup last year. Notably, Chahal has not picked up more than a wicket in any of his last 11 matches for India in the shortest format of the game.

Following a terrific IPL 2022 campaign, Chahal is expected to be an automatic choice in the XI for India against South Africa. The leg-spinner has competition from Kuldeep Yadav, Ravi Bishnoi and Axar Patel.
