At the age of 70, former all-rounder Phil Carlson of Queensland and Australia passed away following a protracted illness.

In the summer of 1978–1979, during the height of the World Series Cricket rift, Carlson participated in two Tests and four One-Day Internationals for Australia, all against England. He was called up to participate in the final two Tests of a six-match series that Australia lost 5-1 because the World Series players were not present.

In 1969–70, Carlson made a big impression in Australia, recording an 18-year-old Sheffield Shield century for Queensland. He batted best for Queensland in 1977–78 and 1978–79, when he averaged 45.46 and 40.33, respectively.

He participated in the last two Tests of the Ashes series, which Mike Brealey’s English team—which had players of the calibre of Graham Gooch, David Gower, and Ian Botham—won 5-1.

During his time in baggy green, Carlson claimed the wickets of Gooch and Brearley as well as Gooch’s in each of his ODI games.  Allan Border, a legend in Queensland and Australia, made his debut during the six-match series.
