Eknath Shinde takes oath as Maharashtra CM, Devendra Fadnavis his deputy

Putting an end to over a week-long political turmoil in Maharashtra, rebel Shiv Sena leader Eknath Shinde took oath as chief minister of the state on Thursday evening. BJP leader and former chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, after initial reluctance, took oath as deputy chief minister.

Shortly after taking oath at the Raj Bhavan, Shinde and Fadnavis held their first cabinet meeting and decided to call a special session of the state Assembly on July 2 and 3. In the Assembly, the newly formed government will face the trust vote and also elect the new Speaker of the House.

The climax to the Maharashtra political potboiler did not come easy as it was accompanied by a lot of twists and turns. Here’s how the events unfolded.

On Thursday, Eknath Shinde flew from Goa to Mumbai and met Devendra Fadnavis at his residence. Following the meeting, they left for Raj Bhavan to meet Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari and stake claim to form the government in Maharashtra.

While it was being speculated that Devendra Fadnavis will return as the Maharashtra CM, in an unexpected turn of events, he announced that Eknath Shinde would be the next CM.

Addressing a press conference, Fadnavis also said that he won’t be joining the new government but will support and take care of it from the outside.

However, within an hour, BJP president JP Nadda said that the party high command wanted Devendra Fadnavis to become the deputy chief minister.

Subsequently, Fadnavis agreed to take up the new role.

Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari administered the oath of office to Fadnavis and Shinde at Raj Bhavan at 7:30 pm.

Shinde began by paying tributes to late Shiv Sena leaders Bal Thackeray and Anand Dighe. His supporters shouted slogans hailing Bal Thackeray and Anand Dighe as he finished taking the oath.

“Development of the state is my priority. I will take all sections of society along with me,” Shinde said after the ceremony.

Shiv Sena leader and former Maharashtra Chief Minister, Udhhav Thackeray, and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar congratulated Eknath Shinde on becoming the new CM and Devendra Fadnavis on taking oath as the deputy chief minister.

Uddhav Thackeray took to Twitter and wrote, “Congratulations to the newly appointed Chief Minister of Maharashtra Eknath Shinde Ji and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis Ji for the future. I wish you a good job in Maharashtra!”

NCP chief Sharad Pawar said, “I spoke with Eknath Shinde and extended my greetings. I also expressed my expectation that the head of a state leads the entire state and not just a party. You might represent a party, but after taking the oath, you represent the state. So, I expect him to work to resolve issues of all departments.”

Eknath Shinde and Devendra Fadnavis held their first cabinet meeting shortly after the oath-taking ceremony ended. They announced a special session of the Assembly on July 2 and 3. Polls will be held to elect the new speaker along with a trust vote.

According to sources, Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has asked his legal team to inform the court that the metro car shed will be shifted back to Aarey Colony. Earlier, the Uddhav government had shifted it to Kanjurmarg.
