Congress takes aim at Smriti Irani’s daughter over illegal bar in Goa

Congress leader Pawan Khera on Saturday alleged that Union Minister Smriti Irani’s daughter Zoish is allegedly running a restaurant in Goa, in which a bar is functioning on a ‘fake licence’. Pawan Khera alleged corruption charges against the minister and said that the license procured by Smriti Irani’s daughter is in the name of a person who died 13 months ago.

“The party she belongs to and her daughter must be very sanskari. The people of your party are obsessed with Lulu Mall and Hanuman Chalisa and her children are involved in corruption under her patronage. This restaurant doesn’t even have a license under the restaurant policy,” Pawan Khera said.

Noting that it is a ‘very serious issue’, the Congress also shared a copy of the show cause notice given to the bar, and said the excise official who gave the notice is reportedly being transferred after pressure from authorities.

Congress has said that Narendra Modi government should sack Smriti Irani as her daughter was running an ‘illegal bar’ in Goa.

“Security forces are roaming around the bar today. Smriti Irani talks about Rahul Gandhi, please answer about the bar and not Akbar. She is a favourite of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. We ask PM Modi that Smriti Irani should be removed from ministership in the government,” Congress leader Pawan Khera said.

Smriti Irani’s daughter Zoish on Saturday termed these charges as ‘baseless’ and said she was neither an owner nor operating the restaurant, reported news agency PTI.

Zoish Irani’s lawyer, Kirat Nagra, issued a statement and denied the charges against her client. Her lawyer said Smriti Irani’s political opponents have levelled various “concocted” allegations against her with a predetermined objective of defaming her for solely being the daughter of a political leader.

Zoish’s lawyer, however, said she has not received any show cause notice from any authority.

“My client, a young eighteen-year old student and a budding chef who has worked in various restaurants to learn culinary arts, is sought to be scarred in perpetuity by her mother’s political opponents who with oblique and ulterior motives, seek to malign her.

Zoish is currently pursuing her prospects in higher education, and “does not work at the eatery and has no knowledge, much less any involvement, with the events that have purportedly transpired in relation to the said eatery”, the statement read.

“These political opponents have levelled various baseless charges and concocted allegations against our client. It is unfortunate that they have resorted to spreading false propaganda only to sensationalize a non-issue without ascertaining true facts and with a predetermined objective of defaming our client for solely being the daughter of a political leader,” Nagra said in the statement.

Delhi BJP leader Tajinder Pal Singh Bagga has refuted the claims and said Smriti Irani’s daughter is studying in the US and has no connection with the bar.

“Congress goons are targeting the 18-year-old daughter on the instructions of Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi,” Bagga tweeted. “Smriti Irani’s daughter is not the owner of restaurant so question of she being sent notice does not arise. 18-year-old girl is completing her studies currently out of India. It is a perfect case of defamation for maligning a young girl’s name for political reasons,” the BJP leader tweeted.
