A great friend and impactful captain: Yuvraj Singh’s warm birthday wish for Sourav Ganguly

Sourav Ganguly turned 50 on Friday, July 8 and wishes have been pouring in for the former India captain and Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president. Leading the bandwagon on social media are Yuvraj Singh and Mohammad Kaif, two cricketers who were groomed under the leadership of Ganguly during a successful transition phase that the legendary cricketer oversaw.

Yuvraj Singh took to social media to share throwback photos from some of the iconic moments involving him and Sourav Ganguly, the birthday boy.

“Happy Birthday Dada! You’ve been a great friend, an impactful captain and a senior any youngster would want to learn from. Wishing you good health and happiness on your special day ?? lots of love and best wishes always,” the former India all-rounder wrote on Twitter.

“From a fine batsman to an outstanding captain & now leading indian cricket on the whole-here’s wishing my favourite captain & mentor @SGanguly99 a very happy birthday,” Kaif tweeted.

Notably, it’s a big birthday week in Indian cricket as MS Dhoni celebrated his 41st birthday on Thursday, July 7 with his friends and family in the UK.

Ganguly, who is attributed to changing the face of Indian cricket, especially after the match-fixing scandal in the early 2000s, led India to some historic victories, including the 2001 Test series against Australia at home, and the Champions Trophy victory in 2002. India made the World Cup final under Ganguly’s leadership in 2003.

Ganguly played 113 Tests, and 311 ODIs, scoring 7212 Test runs and 11,363 runs in the 50-over format of the game. Ganguly hit 38 international hundreds during a decorated career.

The Bengal superstar was more than handy with the ball as he picked up a total of 132 wickets.

Having proven naysayers wrong from the start of his career, Ganguly brought the curtains down on his international cricket journey in 2008.

The former India opener took over as the BCCI president in October 2019 and he has been at the helm of administrative affairs through the Covid-19 pandemic. Ganguly overcame health issues last year and has was seen playing a key role in staging the Indian Premier League 2022 season at home.
